Roman intaglios and cameos
A neo-classical agate cameo. Andromeda and Perseus. カメオ
Two layers (white and pinkish) agate cameo deeply carved with a scene depicting Perseus
rescuing Andromeda after returning from slaying Medusa. The heros is wearing the winged sandals of Hermes. (The identification of the subject is due to the kindness of Mrs. Michele Rowan, London).
The cameo is from the roman marble sculpture (2nd century A.D.), found in the Villa Pamphili of Roma and kept in the Musei Capitolini.
Perfect condition.
Probably Italian work, early 19th century.
The cameo is mounted in a gold and turquoise enamel brooch. French work, circa 1830-1840.
